- Relieve –
- Resolve –
- Rebuild –
- Regain –
The Faith That Prepare For The Worst
By Ps. Andrew Wong
“Call Upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you and you shall glorify me.” Psalm 50:15
Though the occurrence of disaster is not incessant, the existence of crisis is imminent everywhere! Whether connected to us or not, people next to you and I might endure crisis invisibly in different forms.
Crisis can be originated from physical diseases, shortage of material, broken relationship, natural or man caused disaster. In fact, the negative implication of crisis can spread out from individuals to families, to communities or even to the extent of threatening nation security!
During crisis, people are emotionally unstable, rationally wavering; these are followed by worries, tiredness and recurrence of vicious mindset. At this juncture, what the suffering victims need and the most is an immediate assistance.
Christianity is a belief of Emmanuel; our God is our savior in time of torment, He is the God who walks with sufferer in time of adversity. The crux of Theology of Suffering reflects the mere expectation of God from the sufferer that is to have firm conviction in Him. Meanwhile, God expect His beloved nation extending their helping hands to support, to care and to relieve the sufferer at this critical moment.
Crisis in Greek implies “critical decisive moment”. From my previous experience in rendering help, I truly found that turning points exist everywhere during crisis, however, that is also depend very much on the decision that we made. As for the victim, this is the juncture of submission or desertion. As for His nation, this is the critical moment of obedience and continual incensing of our sacrifice.
While the unbelievers cried out “Who is my neighbour?” the submissive Christian who steps into his neighbourhood to relieve his neighbour from calamity is actually enabling the victim to best experience the presence of God.
Crisis intervention requires us to positively respond to the problems we are confronting as this is a process to bring about positive changes. Hence, this critical moment is challenging our expediency in intervention which embed the 4R in objective:-
Relieve – immediate provision of feasible means to relieve pain
Resolve – to resolving the current problem promptly
Rebuild – to rebuild the self, self confidence and independence of the victims
Regain – to regain victims’ ability to handle difficulties and ability to adapt
In time of placid, disciples should truly acknowledge his identity and mission (as a submissive Samaritan), churches should well equipped in effective crisis intervention [Good (effective) Samaritan]. After all, our Lord’s expectation on us in time of disaster is the same “To do the same as I do”. Last but not least, a short question to ask, “what is your church’s decision at this critical moment?”
(When I had just finished writing this article, few Pastors called up to know about our response in the Myanmar Cyclone Disaster. Downheartedly, I told them“ Malaysian Chinese Churches are not ready yet!’ Ironically, for the Intensive Workshop (16-19/7/08) which has been publicized for half a year, there are only 4 participants registered themselves.)
