Dear Pastors/Leaders, Bodies in Christ and Friends of HISTEAM,
Thank you for your prayer and offering, HISTEAM has achieved the goals which were set when we started to response to the needs due to Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan. We have succeeded in raising RM 170,352.35 for the rebuilding fund and commissioned a relief team of 10 to the disaster areas in Taiwan. We estimate that we can fully transfer the rebuilding fund at the end of November to the 3 main beneficiaries.
Three months have passed since the hit of Typhoon Morakot in Taiwan. This typhoon has brought great destruction to Eastern and Southern Taiwan. Besides large numbers of casualties and injuries and severe destruction of houses, the trauma it brought is hard to estimate. On 29 Sept 2009, HISTEAM sent a relief team which departed from KLIA and arrived at Kaohsiung International Airport, co-operated with Taiwan Chinese Christian Relief Association (CCRA) and started the work of relief and soul rebuilding.
The team was lead by Pastor Andrew Wong with a total of 10 members. They came from all over Malaysia. The team comprises pastors, psychiatrist, engineer, medical staff, and coworkers of an organization or churches. After the updates and brief report from the General Secretary of CCRA about the latest relief news, our relief team split into groups of two, headed directly to serve the victims in the disaster areas. The first group headed to the east part of Taiwan, working in disaster area in Taimali, Daniao, Kangleli etc. On the other hand, the second team headed to the south part of Taiwan, working in disaster area in Donggang, Linbian, Fang Shan, Jiadong etc.
There are 6 missions which have been achieved during this relief trip.
- Transfer donation of nearly 1 million NTD (RM 110,000) to “Chinese Christian Relief Association”, “World Vision Taiwan (WV)” and “Minorities for Christ International (MFCI)” for their long-term reconstruction projects.
- Giving out 120 pieces of drawing entitled “Little dream” from children in Jementah to the children in the mountain area to show our concern and encourage them to go on.
- Provide trauma counseling for the traumatize victims that need to be followed up.
- Learn from World Vision Taiwan on how to rebuild houses in disaster area for the victims and assist them physically.
- Preach at Sunday pulpit (4/10) to give message of comforting and encouragement so that the victims will be recharged and continue to rebuild their houses.
- Learn from CCRA the relief and rebuilding model of “1919 service centre” so that we can set up such service model in Malaysia and alliance with CCRA.
When the first group was helping in houses rebuilding in Taimali, they met President of Taiwan, President Ma who was touring in disaster area visitation. They also had the chance to express care and concern from Malaysians to the victims in Taiwan. President Ma and the local victims there were touched by our presence. Besides helping in the construction site to rebuild houses, the team also went to the mountain area to care for the victims there, giving the kids of minorities some encouraging free gifts hoping that this can reduce the hurt caused by this disaster.
On the other hand, the second group was doing visitation house-to-house to care for the victims in disaster area in Southern Taiwan. They visited them, gave them the small gift of encouragement, pray for them and encouraged them to face the rebuilding process with courage. Coincidently, one of the most important days in Chinese Lunar Calendar – Mid Autumn Festival was within the relief trip period. The group, collaborated with the local relief team, organized a barbeque party for the victims. They also help out in distributing material aid to the victim on the next day so that the victims could still feel the warmth of this festival. Besides that, the group also entered the shelter homes for victims, helping in tutorial class after school and spiritual needs of the children of the victims so that their parents can focus in the rebuilding work.
The frequent occurrence of disaster implies that end time is near and we are really helpless if we want to response to all disasters. On 29/9-6/10, as HISTEAM led a team of 10 people to Taiwan for relief work, 4 typhoons and 2 deadly earthquake occurred in South Asia and Western Pacific Ocean. The two groups of our relief team were reunited at Kaohsiung on 5th Oct and flew back to Malaysia on the next day.
What we can do during this relief trip was really limited, but for disaster response and practical action, these have deeply touched and encouraged numerous victims in Taiwan and the lives of relief team members are not the same like before. This action portrays vividly that disaster relief is one of the responses we, as God’s children, should have in order to live out the Great Commandment of loving God and our neighbours. Present at the disaster area and share the burden of our suffered bodies in Christ there are the unity we can show as members in God’s family who giving out love which transcends the barrier of country. Enclosed with this report are an EP given by CCRA and donation record for Taiwan Typhoon Morakot Rebuilding Fund.
Thank you for putting your love in action!
