A belief which fellowship with those suffering
In the journey of pursuing spiritual life, I discover that the God whom I serve and love is pleased by our being than our doing. God takes delight in His people who act according to His attributes. In the Bible, one of the most common attribute of God that being revealed is “compassionate and gracious God”. There are many occasions in the Bible where God revealed Himself what He favours clearly. We can see that the word “mercy” is repeating frequently and significantly in both old and new testaments. Our Heavenly Father could definitely feel our love for Him, when we imitate the character of Abba Father and be in the shoe of the sufferer and mourn together with the person who mourns.
The motive we show mercy to people is because we love God and to glorify Him, doing for Him alone and intend to do on Him only. Mercy is not pity but transcend it, because mercy is shown according to God’s attribute to the needs of man who is created in the image of God. A person who is merciful will see one’s responsibility in other’s need with grace and respect. Showing mercy is to love others according to the commandment of God. It is a natural thing and nothing to boast of. Expression of mercy is also the result of God’s moving, showing it out in a more practical way.
In the sermon of Mount / the Beatitudes, only the fifth promise says that when we do something we will receive the same thing ~ “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” (Matt 5:7), In my personal experience of practicing the Great Commandment, blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy is because this action is showing thanksgiving/gratitude to God (1 Tim 1:15-16). Showing mercy is really pleasing God for it is an action that learned from God. (2 Cor 1:3). Won’t God be pleased with you if you a child with His image have a thankful heart?
Serving is not just serving God Himself, but also showing mercy to others because we are serving a merciful God. Jesus always sees the needs of people and responds to that. If we don’t see the needs of others, we would never be able to understand God’s heart. Showing mercy is utmost in Jesus’ ministry. If our attitude wants to be the same as that of Christ Jesus, we must have a sensitive heart, and to move in action when God moves us. For me and HISTEAM, we intend to please our God by fellowshipping with our neighbours who are in suffering. Can we invite you to bear this cross of love? Can we together walk this path that will in return be shown mercy?
